New views of professional development have led to new professional development models and designs. These models present educators with a wide variety of options and opportunities to enhance their professional knowledge and skills.

Models of Professional Development

  • Training
  • Observation/assessment
  • Involvement in a development/improvement process
  • Study groups
  • Inquiry/action research
  • Individually guided activities
  • Mentoring

Coaching is usually focused on professional dialogue designed to aid the coachee in developing specific skills to enhance their teaching repertoire. For teachers, it often supports experimentation with new classroom strategies and coaches are not normally in positions of line management in relationship to their coachee. The focus of the coaching is usually selected by the coachee and the process provides opportunities for reflection and problem solving for both coach and coachee.

Effective Coaching Techniques

  • Sharing classroom practice with a colleague;
  • Judging the quality of practice and seeking or giving feedback;
  • Supporting induction or career transition;
  • Working toward a school or department development priority;
  • Supporting a professional development course or Masters level
Study andworking towards a performance management target (Fletcher & Mullen,2012).

The student focus should be used as a tool to guide teacher learning. Collaborative examination of student work, by definition, keeps the focus on student learning. This should be done continuously, zeroing in on areas of student performance that need strengthening in accord with the annual objectives.(Roberts & Pruitt, 2008) This in return keeps the foucs on the content being taught. The students response allows teachers to modify their instrcution or reteach the content altogether.
