  • Usually phrases that are particular for a specific country or region, cannot easily be translated into another laguage without the context of the actual meaning
  • yet, these phrases, might be a lever to bridge different cultures amongst different countries.
  • Learning the meaning of the phrases will create a collaboration / inclusion atmosphere amongst the varies countries / cultures / societies.

Analysis

  • As the world is getting global, Language Based Inclusuin becomes one of the fundamental necessities to operate in an international social enviorment.
  • Our goal is to highlight potential cultural inclusion, based on common understanding of idoms and phrases.

Objectives:

  • To raise awareness for these language particularities in different regions and countries, to help pupils gaining an opn minded and inclusive mindset, as well as language usage.

Implementation Plan Strategy

Analysis

  • Our intent is aiming for a simple exercise, to be presented and operated by school pupils to get some cross-cultural skills, based on language.
  • This exercise, which will include some painting and calligraphic aspects, can be used as a gamification of cross-language and cross-cultural aspects, and easy to be played by pupils.
  • Many expressions are sometimes being literally translated when it comes to cross-language. Yet, most of these expressions are in a cultural contest, hence a literal translation might be mistakenly understood by the foreign conversation’s partner.
  • These expressions might be a very good icebreaking for cross-cultural inclusion, also explaining the cultural explanation, which by itself will create a better cultural understanding.

Activities for pupils to learn language-based inclusion: Language Expression’ Hunt: Provide pupils a list of phrases and ask them to: 1. Write the expression’s meaning in their local language. 2. Search the meaning of these expressions in the other language. 3. Look for the origin of these expressions, based on the local culture. 4. Provide a painting or a sketch that could be seen as a depiction of the specific expressions. 5. Present the outcome of this work to the entire class. 6. Share the results in a collaborative media (e.g. Pad-let, Google-Docs, etc.)

Generate a quiz : 1. Matching a painting/sketch to it’s phrase 2. Matching a painting/sketch to the meaning in each language.3. Trivia (e.g. Trivo, Wordwall, etc.) quiz of phrases meanings.

Challenges & Potential obstacles

  • The main potential drawback is the latent constraint which is embedded within every language, which is the fact that some expressions are such heavily based on culture that can not be translated to another language.Expressions as such are for instance
  • expressions in English that are coming from minorities within the USA, or expressions and idioms in Israeli Hebrew that are related to the mandatory military service Israeli citizens have, or Biblical ones, etc.
