Activity 4

Windmills

Read the information about windmills.

Activity 5

The Working Windmill

Since ancient times, windmills have been used, primarily as a method of grinding grain into flour by using the power of the wind. The original windmills, used in Persia in the 9th century, were vertical-axis mills, but modern windmills use a horizontal axis, in which the blades are fixed to a central post, which is more efficient.

Blades The blades of the windmill are angled rather like the propeller of an airplane so as to catch the wind, which turns them. A tail fan automatically maneuvers the blades into the direction of the wind. The blades are connected to a drive shaft inside the windmill.

Millstones The drive shaft has a gear wheel connected to other gears within the wooden hursting frame, which houses the millstones. One millstone is fixed in position and the other is caused to rotate when the drive shaft rotates.

Activity 6: Renewable energy sources.

SOLAR ENERGY

Wind energy, or wind power, is created using a wind turbine, a device that channels the power of the wind to generate electricity. The wind blows the blades of the turbine, which are attached to a rotor. The rotor then spins a generator to create electricity.

WIND ENERGY

Solar energy is the most abundant of all energy resources and can even be harnessed in cloudy weather. The rate at which solar energy is intercepted by the Earth is about 10,000 times greater than the rate at which humankind consumes energy.

Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because heat is continuously produced inside the earth. People use geothermal heat for bathing, for heating buildings, and for generating electricity.

Hydropower, or hydroenergy, is a form of renewable energy that uses the water stored in dams, as well as flowing in rivers to create electricity in hydropower plants.

Activity 7: Cervantes.

  1. I was born in Alcalá de Henares in 1547.

2. I was the fourth brother of a modest family of six children. My father, Rodrigo, was a bleeding surgeon.

3. I moved to Valladolid very small and from there, in 1553, I moved to Córdoba.

4. In 1569 I was located in Rome, fleeing from justice.

5. I entered the service of the young Cardinal Julio Acquaviva.

6. In July 1570 I joined the Navy. In 14 September 1571 I sailed in the Alliance fleet in search of the Turkish Navy. In 7 October 1571. Battle of Lepanto, the most memorable and lofty occasion seen in the past centuries nor do they expect to see the coming.

7. In 20 September 1575. I left Italy for Spain. A storm separated my ship from the rest ; I was captured by pirates and taken captive to Algiers.

8. In October 27, 1580 I arrived in Spain after being released.

9. In 18 September 1587 I began my work as a requisitioner commissioner in Andalusia. I toured this region, where I met many corners and characters of all kinds and types.

10. In April 1594 I was appointed tax collector.

11. In 1605 I published the first part of my immortal work, El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, which, despite its success, did not bring me great benefits. The second part appeared in 1615 with the title El ingenioso caballero don Quijote de la Mancha.

12. I died on April 23, 1616.

Activity 9. BACK TO THE PAST.

We invite you to travel back in time to the Valladolid of 1605. Do you want to know what happened in this year when it was the capital of Spain? Come and find out!In 1604 the Treaty of London was signed which ended the 20-year war between Spain and England. Peace was celebrated in Valladolid. The ambassador and his entourage arrived in our city and for them a great party was prepared: Ephemeral architecture, exotic smells, fireworks, dance and the best authors of the time writing for this event. We invite you to follow in the footsteps of the English ambassador and his entourage. Perhaps Shakespeare was among them. Perhaps Cervantes and Shakespeare had a meeting in our city, although that will never be known. We will tour the Plaza Mayor, the Platerías street, the Calderón theater or the Plaza San Pablo. The most baroque places of Valladolid. We wait for you! For us you are more important than the English of the time of Cervantes, because you are already our friends!

When I was young things were different. We didn’t have SDGs. Pay attention, because we can all make a better world.
