1. The sunflower

In a garden full of flowers of all kinds,

an unnamed plant grew right in the centre. He was robust, but ungainly, with stringy and fragrance-free flowers.

For all the other noble plants of the garden he was nothing more or less than a weed and they did not speak to him. However, the heart of the nameless plant was full of kindness and ideals.

He transformed all the sunlight into life force, sugars, and sap. After a while, his stem, that was previously stunted and weak, become a gorgeous, sturdy, and straight trunk, more than two meters tall.

The plants in the garden began to look at him with respect, and even with a little envy. "That beanpole is a bit crazy" whispered dahlias and daisies. The nameless plant paid no attention to them.

When in the morning the first rays of the sun tickled the ground and played with the dewdrops making,

them look like iridescent diamonds on the camellias and like rubies and sapphires on the roses, all the other plants lazily stretched out.

The nameless plant, on the other hand, did not miss a single ray of sunshine. He soaked them up one after another. He had a project. As the sun moved across the sky, he would have followed him to not abandon him, neither for a moment.

Of course he could not uproot himself from the earth, but he could force his stem to twist in unison with the sun. In this way, they would not have been separated.

The marvel reached its climax when, at the top of the stem of the nameless plant, a magnificent flower, resembling the sun in an extraordinary way, blossomed.

It was large, round, with a sunburst of yellow petals and characterized by a beautiful golden and warm yellow.

That big face as usual continued to follow the sun as he crossed the sky.

The first to notice it were the daisies which, as everyone knows, are gossipy.

"He fell in love with the sun," they began to broadcast.

"The beanpole is in love with the sun", the tulips said chuckling.

"Ooooh, what a romantic!", the violets modestly whispered.

Thus, the carnations named him "sunflower". They called him in this way to make fun of him, but it turned out that everyone liked it, including himself.

From that moment on, when someone asked him his name, he answered proudly: "My name is Sunflower".

However, roses, hydrangeas and dahlias never stop to whisper about what, according to them, was something too weird to not hide in itself either pride or something even worse as some very disordered feelings.

It was the snapdragons, the bravest flowers in the garden, who spoke directly to the sunflower. “Why are you always looking up at the air? Why don't you give us a look?

And yet we are plants like you!" shouted the snapdragons to make themselves heard.

"Friends", replied the sunflower, "I am happy to live with you, but I love the sun. He is my life and I cannot take my eyes off him.

I follow him on his way. I love him so much that I already feel a little like him. What can you do? The sun is my life and I live for him!...".

Like all good people, the sunflower spoke loudly and all the flowers in the garden could hear him.
