Tetanus

Clostridium tetani

also known as lockjaw

Someone can get tetanus if dirt, feces, or spit enters a cut or wound. The disease is spread if a skin wound is contaminated by tetanus bacteria. It cannot spread from person to person. Animals can be affected by tetanus as well. Tetanus is most likely found in soil, dirt, or manure and it normally affects the nervous system, causing the organism that has it to have severe muscle spasms. It also attacks the lower motor neurons (cells that activate voluntary muscles). Doctors can diagnose patients for tetanus by asking about recent history about cuts and scrapes. Effect of tetanus lasts for minuets but does no permanent damage. Tetanus can cause death (1-2 in 10 cases) To protect yourself from tetanus, you can clean your wounds or get a vaccination. If the pathogen is spotted, please contact the Pathogen detective's office.
