What Is Sickle Cell Anemia?

Sickle cell anemia is one of a group of inherited disorders known as sickle cell disease. It affects the shape of red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body.

What causes Sickle-cell Anemia?

  • Misshapen cells occur due to abnormalities in haemoglobin.
  • The disease is passed down genetically.
  • For a child to inherit the trait, both parents must carry one copy of the gene.
  • People with the sickle-cell trait make both typical and sick-cell haemoglobin.
  • Sickle cells die quicker than regular ones thus leaving a shortage of red blood cells
