Day 1: Invitation to Notice

What do scholars notice about sentence?

Invitation to Notice the pattern

Teachers will....

  • Choose a sentence from weekly read aloud or other content area to model the focus phrase.
  • Encourage scholar insight and inquiry by asking: "What do you notice"?
  • Collect responses and encourage additional notices.
  • Cue discussion using guided prompts or questions that help scholars name the focus phrase.

Invitation to Compare and COntrast

Do scholars recognize similarities and differences between two sentences?

Invitation to Compare and Contrast

Teachers will....

  • Choose a different sentence that models the focus phrase and show both sentences to scholars.
  • Encourage scholar insight and inquiry by asking " How are these sentences alike and different"?
  • Collect scholar responses and encourage further discourse.
  • Cue the thinking and discussion as needed leading to the focus phrase as a similarity or difference.
  • Celebrate scholars efforts.

Invitation to imitate

Can scholars imitate with guidance the pattern?

The invitation to imitate is the shared work of practicing the pattern described by the focus phrase. It is a guided attempt ( we do) at practicing the new skill.

Invitation to Edit

Scholars recognize where the pattern is needed.
The goal of the editing invitation is to invite scholars to discuss the ways a sentence can change and how that effects the reader.
Teacher Will:
  • Display the original sentence.
  • Ask, “What did we learn about writing from the author?”
  • Stamp the focus phrase.
  • Create 3 different versions of the sentence, each should have a single change.
  • Ask, “What changed?”
  • Encourage scholar discourse and inquiry.
  • Ask, “What effect does that have on the reader?
  • Celebrate ,The power of the pattern.
