1) This is the most basic right of all. We have a right to life and cannot be unjustly killed by another human.

2) The state must positively protect life by enforcing criminal laws, protecting life under immediate threat and avoiding accidental deaths.3) Deaths wich happen when people are being looked after by the state must be properly investigated

1. Everyone’s right to life shall be protected by law. No one shall be deprived of his life intentionally save in the execution of a sentence of a court following his conviction of a crime for which the penalty is provided by law.2. Deprivation of life shall not be regarded as inflicted in contravention of this Article when it results from the use of force which is no more than absolutely necessary: - in defence of any person from unlawful violence - in order to effect a lawful arrest or to prevent the escape of a person lawfully detained, and - in action lawfully taken for the purpose of quelling a riot or insurrection.

1) The state must not take life unless it's necessary, such as in self-defence, for arrest or to deal with a riot.

The death penalty is still with us. Over 4000 people were put to death last year. Three quarters of these people lived in China

Sometimes people are killed by police. In England and Wales in 2022 72 people were killed during or after contact with the police

The police must act on threats to out lives. - Ahamet' s teacher stalked his family but the police did nothing. He killed Ahmet's dad. This breached the family's rights to life.(Osman, Europe, 1998) Soldiers are protected in combat zones. - Families of soldiers who died because of faulty equipment. The right to life meant the Army couldn't hind behind immunity laws. (Smith, UK, 2013) Doctors, police and social workers must protect life. (Rabone, UK, 2013)
