Khan Academy Edition

  • Peaches: Students really enjoyed working through content at their own pace. Though station rotation was conceptualized for individual students moving, these groups thrived in the teambuilding aspect. Excel functions are hard at first glace and they seemed to enjoy having the content to work through together and again later alone.
  • Pits: We only meet twice a week, so time is very precious. I ended up leaning on Khan academy for video content as their material was far more concise than anything I was creating and a lot of students needed refreshers on basics of operation properties.
  • What, if anything, would you have done differently?I would print out copies ahead of time - I had to make the photopcopies quickly before -- no one seems completely paperless yet.
  • The school has laptops per floor, but -- as the computer class -- we have an entire lab. It seemed silly to move out of the class just to integate laptops, so we had different computer sections set up for 'stations'. Students seemed pleased with the movement around the room.
  • Key highlights of piloting your project: Students did not want to work alone. They were fine completing the assignments alone after the activity, but they really wanted to use the activity to help each other.

Take Aways & Looking Forward

  • Students enjoyed interacting with the different online content.
  • They pointed out that a lot of the techniques are the same techniques that were integrated in their earlier education -- station rotation -- just in a virtual form.
  • Students do not want only online content. They like to have handouts for reviewing at work, in transit, etc.
  • As a teacher I found it difficult to produce content that aligns with the different options given, DED's, and also ensuring that students were prepared for their exams. I think it is a reconceptualization of how we lesson plan, it is not something that will quickly shift intially, but once you get the idea it is certainy doable.
  • There is a lot of online content that exists already. I think making new video content serves a purpose if it does not already exist, but otherwise it is make-work. Though students do seem to like hearing their teacher's voice.
  • I think if you have already taught the program before it would be a lot easier to integrate.
