The significance of teacher- student relationships are beyound dispute, yet maintaininng these relationships is a complex task. How to foster a relationship. Create a balance between closeness vs distance and control vs freedom. > Create a learning-conducive atmosphere A sense of fairness, predictability and safety. Safety does not just mean safeguarding but the willingness for students to feel comfortable when making a mistake. > Positive student to student interactions To develop a family ethos and values. By developing a community within the classroom.
People mirror each other. If you smile, someone will smile back. If you care, they care. Why not doing an activity together to build common ground. A great way to build a healthy relationship is to listen. Seek to understand and support where possible. Knowing someones name and using it is very important. Undertstanding someones background, struggles and circumstances brings closeness within the group. Develop relationships over transcations. Challenge: Can you name everyone in this room and atleast name one of their hobbies?
The climate for learning consists of the relationships between staff and students; the environment in which learning take place; and the way in which the learning is managed by both staff and students. The environment in which students work is important. Could the students develop the environment alongside the teacher? Who decrorates the classroom? Does the classroom reprsent their chosen industry? Who sets up the room? Who maanages the environment? A joint approach to this will improve buy-in from all parties involved.
Students tend to get distracted when they are bored or do not understand the topic. Learning is meant to be challenging, but you must becareful to make sure it's not too hard or too easy. The climate must make students are aware of their untapped potential and develop learning rather than teaching to task.
Tips for to keep the students in engaged:The students must be aware of what they are learning.Do the students understand of the topic? (This is challenging section) Can the student identify their own capability to complete the challenge. Does the student have the commitment to complete the challenge. Challenges are easier to overcome when they are fun or you can see the desired outcome.
Challenge : Decorate the room with your students. Make it fun :)
A growth mindset is a belief that you can develop your skills and talents through hard work, the right strategies, and guidance from others. So how do we embed that into our students?
Here are ten steps to support developing growth mindset
Step 1: Getting the language right Step 2: Changing how students perceive mistakes Step 3: Targeting student effort Step 4: Giving great feedback Step 5: Thinking about thinking Step 6: Creating a challenging culture Step 7: Focussing on the process Step 8: Engaging parents to develop growth mindset Step 9: Reflective questioning Step 10: Pay attention to stories. Yours and theirs.
Challenge:Pick one step 1: Research and read more about that step. Implement one step into your teaching practice.
Activity 1: Body language Stand up. Posture. Chin up. Chest out. Pin your shoulder back and low. Posture for attention. When someone calls your attention. Don't provide it straight away. This shows that your energy is easily given. Leave it 5 seconds then state you will be over in a minute. Late students So many times we've witnessed late students arrive at the door and the teacher rushes to the door. This shows the class that the late student is more important than the class. Let the student knock and wait until you are ready to let them in.
