Dramatic irony is a literary device that can be seen when the reader's understanding of a certain situation in the story surpasses the character's knowledge or understanding.

THE STEPS OF DRAMATIC IRONY

In this stage the reader is given the information some of the characters do not have.

PREPARATION

In this stage the story starts to play out based on the character's knowledge. The consequences of the character's lack of knowledge or understanding are starting to be revealed and all the reader can do is keep on reading and see what happens next.

SUSPENSE

The full significance of the character's lack of knowledge or ignorance is revealed, it can either be shocking, comical or tragical.

RESOLUTION

EXAMPLES

Still, the lack of information, leads to both of the character's death.
In this story, Romeo thinks his lover, Juliet, is dead. On the other hand, the readers know that Juliet is asleep and will wake up eventually.

Still, Snow White eats it and this leads her to an unending sleep.
In this story, dramatic irony is used when Snow White eats the apple the witch gave her, we as readers know it has been cursed and poisoned.

In this story, Othello, the main character, is tricked into thinking his wife is cheating on him. The reader knows it is a trap, and that it is not true. Still, Othello murders his wife, and then himself.
