Which Program?
Specifically designed to help recently arrived MLs, this program includes not only an intensive language acquisition component but also help for MLs who have interrupted schooling to socialize into American schools. These programs typically last from several months up to one year.
Students are pulled out of their regular content class to receive special instruction in English from an ESL specialist. This instruction is tailored to the language needs of the student and can include work on speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
The ESL teacher “pushes in” to the regular classroom to co-teach with the classroom content teacher. This can include working with MLs during group work or providing extra scaffolds as well as support during seatwork.
Also called “content-based instruction”, a sheltered lesson teaches grade-level content to students by using language scaffolds and anticipating what specific language challenges of the lesson for MLs will be.
With a large enough number of MLs who speak the same home language, a bilingual program can teach some content in English and some in the home language. These programs have been shown to be highly effective in helping MLs learn English and maintain their home language.
