the united states offensive
Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States and the United Kingdom invaded Afghanistan to defeat al Qaeda and remove the Taliban government that had sheltered them. The fighting lasted barely two months: the Taliban was removed from power and a transitional government led by Hamid Karzai was imposed. US President George Bush called for the Taliban to hand over Osama bin Laden and drive out al Qaeda

The United States and its allies promptly ousted the Taliban from power on December 17, 2001 and built military bases near the country's major cities. The most important base is the Bagram base
the retreat
The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan began in May 2021 and U.S. combat forces ended their withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 30, 2021. On February 29, 2020, the United States and the Taliban signed a peace agreement titled "agreement to bring peace to Afghanistan," also known as the Doha agreement1 with provisions including the withdrawal of all regular U.S. and NATO troops from Afghanistan.
the retreat
The fall of Kabul corresponds to the seizure of the capital of the then Islamic Republic of Afghanistan by the Taliban on August 15, 2021 in the framework of the so-called Taliban offensive of 2021, which followed the withdrawal of NATO troops from the country. Following the U.S. government's escape, hundreds of U.S. citizens and, separately, hundreds of U.S. residents (green card holders) remained in Afghanistan.
