The struggle for Irish independence
1923
1901
In 1801 the UK was created because of the Act of Union, but in Ireland Home Rule was supported on the one hand; on the other hand it was opposed by the Unionist and the British Conservative Party. The Third Home Rule was suspended in 1914, since tension continued to grow between the Nationalists in the South and the Protestant Unionists in the North, but both supported Britain in the war against Germany.
On Easter Monday, in 1916, a rebellion against British rule was made up by the Irish Republican Brotherhood: Ireland was declared an independent republic; but the uprising was put down because of martial law, many were imprisoned with ho trial and the leaders of the rebellion were executed.
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) started a War of Independence which lasted until 1921, when the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed. Irish Free State was governed by Eamon de Valera, while Ulster remained part of the UK: this caused a Civil War (1922-1923). In 1949 the Republic of Ireland was officially announced.
"OURSELVES ALONE"
In 1918 the Sinn Féin nationalist party easily won the election, being supported by everyone, a part from the province of Ulster; in Dublin in 1919 the Irish Parliament was declared independent.
