FOR WHO ?
‘O Jesus Christ! I’m hit,’ he said; and died.
Whether he vainly cursed or prayed indeed,
The Bullets chirped—In vain, vain, vain!
Machine-guns chuckled—Tut-tut! Tut-tut!
And the Big Gun guffawed.
Another sighed,—‘O Mother,—mother,—Dad!’
Then smiled at nothing, childlike, being dead.
And the lofty Shrapnel-cloud
Leisurely gestured,—Fool!
And the splinters spat, and tittered.
‘My Love!’ one moaned. Love-languid seemed his mood,
Till slowly lowered, his whole face kissed the mud.
And the Bayonets’ long teeth grinned;
Rabbles of Shells hooted and groaned;
And the Gas hissed.

born: march 8th 1893 Oswestry englanddeath: november 4th 1918 (25y) Sambre to Oise Canal (top of france )
He was first influenced by Keats and, like many writers of that time
On October 21, 1915 he enlisted in the Artists' Rifles.
On June 4, 1916, he was assigned as second lieutenant to the Manchester Regiment,
There he met his compatriot, the poet Siegfried Sassoon, who would have a great influence on him, and rubbed shoulders with the poets Robert Graves and Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff, with whom he became friends.
FIRST WORD WAR
the Triple Alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, which opposed the Triple Entente between France, the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire (Russia). Countries are also embarking on an arms race, which explains the alliances called "Military Alliances" of the 14-18 War.On 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo, Serbia, a Serbian nationalist student assassinates Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. Austria issued an utlimatum to Serbia, which the latter refused. In addition, Serbia has an alliance with Russia, a member of the Triple Entente. Austria declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914, and the "mechanism" of alliances was triggered. The First World War has begun.
