What was the refreshing period?

The refreshing period was the period where the slave would go through many cosmetic proceudres before being sold to the slave masters . It would take place in an offshore island.

What happened during refreshing period?

- On arriving the Americas the crew of the ships would prepare the captives to be sold. They would try to make the captives attractive. - They were rubbed with palm oil on their muscles for a healthy and firm appearance. - They were shaved to remove grey hair because the sellers would not know that they were old. -Some were also rubbed with mixture that includes gun powder, lime juice and even iron rust to disguise all wounds and scars. -They were fed so as to improve their appearance.

-Slaves were valued at different prices according to their tribe, age, sex and skills. - Old slaves were valued less due to them being weak and were at the deapths of collapsing - slaves that were muscler and had good health were valuable the most because they could do the greatest amount of hard labor - young adult women had been valued a good price for theit skills to work in the fields - -

  • American born slaves who had skills were most expensive
  • African born slaves were less $, as they had to be “broken in”
  • Age, sex, & skills determined cost
  • Slaves with many scars considered too rebellious

How auctions were carried out

First: Public Auctions: - They put tar on the slaves to hide any sores and cuts - Slaves were inspected - An auction to took place and the higher bidder would get to purchase the slave. - Bids were taken as long as an inch of a candle burned. - Slaves were branded - Families were separated - They were given a European name.

  • Similar to public auctions
  • They were indoors and red markers would be placed on the door to indicate an auction.

  • A Scramble:
  • They would take place on the docks or on the deck of the ship
  • There would be a fixed price per head
  • Slave owners would go in and grab who they wanted to purchase.

Reaction of the captives

-They would be brutally forced out of their homes, separtated from their family and tribes

--some would never seen a white man so they would think they were their to eat them
- Some slaves could not bear anymore and ended up committing suicide. -Many slaves were traumatized by the experience and suffered from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues while others felt overwhelmed and helpless
