Most school boards elect their memebers for three or four - year terms; in the remainder, members are appointed by large-city mayors or city councils. The typical board member is male, white, older, and rich.Educational committee races act as a significant obstruction to more noteworthy minority inclusion since they require significant expenses of cash and time.
School boards serve five important functions (as explained below in Functions of Local School Boards).
A group of elected lay citizens responsible for setting policies that determine how a school district operates. School districts differ dramatically in number and size. Both small and large districts have advantages and disadvantages for a beginning teacher. A small district often rely on face-to-face contact, so things happen quicker. A larger district typically lack resources and support staff.
Members of School Boards and Their Selection
The school principal is responsible for a school's operation. The principal establishes the work and academic environment. They are also responsible for hiring and firing of teachers. They are also evaluated by their school's performance.
The district office assists the superintendent by bringing action to school board policy. They are also responsible for: textbooks and supplies, creating study programs, ordering, distributing, and analyzing standarized tests, and evaluating teachers and addressing any difficulties or issues.
The superintendent is the school district's head administrative officer. They implement policies created by the school board. Some districts superintendent's have little to no educational field experience. The salary varies on both location and district size, but on average they make about $162,000.
