NEWS PAPER
November 10th, 1989
#0922
It all happened during the night from 9 to 10 and it symbolized the end of an era for the whole world.
Weather today: rainy with mild temperatures of 10ºC
The Berlin Wall
The emotional toll of being separated from loved ones for so long was immense. Many people had lost touch with family members and friends, and had no idea what had happened to them over the years. Others had tried to maintain contact, but had been prevented from doing so by the wall and the restrictions on travel and communication. And in the end, their determination paid off.
is now open, allowing citizens to travel freely to the West
The announcement of yesterday produced an immediate effect as thousands of East Berliners flocked to the border checkpoints. Overwhelmed and lacking any clear instructions, the border guards were forced to raise the barriers.
Reunion
Kohl: "We are one nation"
When the wall fell, many people rushed to the border crossings, eager to reunite with their loved ones.
Germans seize the moment of national opportunity.

The rise of the Berlin Wall
West Berlin
East Berlin
For those trapped behind the wall, the pain of separation was a constant ache. They longed for the touch of a loved one, the sound of a familiar voice, the comfort of a shared embrace. But all they found was a cold, gray wall, a symbol of their captivity.
For those on the other side, the pain was just as acute. They wrote letters that never reached their destination, made phone calls that went unanswered and waited endlessly for a reunion that seemed increasingly unlikely.

The fall of the Berlin Wall
"Ich bin ein Berliner"
John F. Kennedy 1963
"It comes into effect, according to my information, immediately"
It all happened during the night from 9 to 10 of November in 1989 and it symbolized the end of an era for the whole world. It had been in the evening of that same day that the regime’s representative surprised journalists by making the confusing statement that citizens could now leave the country through any border checkpoint without the need for special authorisation. They never intended to open the border completely
Günter Schabowski, East Berlin, November 9th 1989
The spokesman didn´t have the time to read the notes about the new rules before his regular press conference. The announcement produced an immediate effect as thousands of East Berliners flocked to the border checkpoints. Overwhelmed and lacking any clear instructions, the border guards were forced to raise the barriers.

Heroes David Bowie
Weeee! can be Heroes...
We kind of heard that a few of the East Berliners might actually get the chance to hear the thing, but we didn’t realize in what numbers they would. And there were thousands on the other side that had come closer to the Wall. So it was like a double concert where the Wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I’d never done anything like that in my life, and I guess I never will again.

Wind of Change Scorpions
"Soldiers passing byListening to the wind of change"
Scorpions 1990
The wind of change blows straight into the face of time Like a storm wind that will ring the freedom bell for peace of mind Let your balalaika sing what my guitar wants to say Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams With you and me Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away In the wind of change
I follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park Listening to the wind of change An August summer night, soldiers passing by Listening to the wind of change The world is closing in And did you ever think That we could be so close like brothers? The future's in the air, I can feel it everywhere I'm blowing with the wind of change Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away In the wind of change
