Translating and Communicating: Integrating Grammar Translation Method with Communicative Approach
Objective: To integrate the Grammar Translation Method with the Communicative Approach in a language learning activity that enhances both grammatical and communicative competence.
Context: This activity is designed for intermediate-level English language learners who have some knowledge of grammar but need to improve their communicative skills.
Activity description
1. Divide into small groups (Maximum 4 students).2. Every group is going to have a copy of text "Chicago" and bilingual dictionaries.3. Every student is going to read the text and identify any unfamiliar words or phrases using their dictionaries tofind the meanings.4. Every group is going to translate the text "Chicago" into their L1 using the Grammar Translation Method, focusing on grammatical accuracy and vocabulary acquisition.5. After completing the translation, you are going to work together to identify key information from the text and summarize it in English using your own words.6. Every group is going to have worksheets with questions related to the text and you must to complete them in pairs.7. Finally, work as a team again to create a dialogue or role-play based on the text, using newly acquired vocabulary and grammar structures.
Assessment
Assess student performance based on their ability to accurately translate the text using GTM principles while also demonstrating communicative competence through summarizing information, answering questions, and creating a dialogue/role-play.This activity integrates both GTM and CA principles by allowing students to focus on grammatical accuracy while also developing communicative skills through summarizing information and creating dialogues/role-plays.
