It is located in the highlands on the borders of the east African countries of Tanzania and Kenya Mount Kilimanjaro is also the highest free-standing mountain on Earth. Mt. Kilimanjaro is a dormant (not active) volcano. It has three volcanic cones, and Kibo is the highest is Kibo. Kibo is the hightest point in Africa, and the fourth highest summit in the world. Kibo is covered in ice year round. Click the GREEN ICON button to look around Kibo.
In 1973, Kilimanjaro National Park was formed to protect the mountain and 6 forested areas that surround the mountain slopes. The forest of the southern slopes are home to elephants, buffalo, and eland (like an antelope). Click the PURPLE info icon to watch the video.
