NEWBORN BONUSES

  • Your child’s citizenship does not affect your entitlement to benefits. However, the parents’ residence permit may affect the financial benefits that the family can obtain. You may have the right to receive benefits from your native country. Child benefit, maternity grant and parental allowances, for example, are also paid abroad.
  • When you have been pregnant for at least 5 months (154 days), you can apply for the maternity grant. The maternity grant can either be paid as a cash benefit or a maternity package containing baby clothes and child care products. If you choose the cash benefit, you get 170 euros, free of tax.
  • The "baby money" will be paid out over a period of five years, with the family receiving 2,000 euros per child in the first year and 1,000 per child per year for the following four years.
  • When a child has been born, you can receive financial support for caring for the child. The guardian of the child is also paid a child benefit until the child turns 17.

PARENTAL LEAVE

Average mother's age: 27,5-29,5

Finland parental leave is divided into three different types: maternal, paternal or family; in the latter case it corresponds to 160 working days, that the two parents can manage in a flexible and shared way. Maternity leave consists of 105 working days; in the first 56 days, mothers receive 90% of the salary, which falls to 70% in subsequent ones. Finally, newly unemployed mothers are the recipients of a special social shock absorber and receive compensation - a sort of 'social' salary - of about 16 euros per working day of 'virtual' leave.
