Comic Style Portraits Exploring Likeness and Capturing Personality Across Styles
Capturing your likeness:
Comic styles tend to simplify features. Think about how you can use these elements to identify YOU:
- Clothing/Jewelry
- Headcoverings/Hats
- Hairstyle
- Facial expressions
- Glasses, braces, hearing devices etc.
- Pose
- Color scheme
- Freckles, scars, birthmarks etc.
Getting Started:
- Try a sketch of each style approximately the same size in your sketchbook. (If you want to try another style that’s not included here, go for it!) Imagine you are a guest character in your favorite cartoon or comic book, what would your character look like?
- Optional: Trace or transfer your most successful drawings to a new page, considering how they will all fit together in a composition (see samples).
- Add pen and color to your linework with colored pencil or markers!
