What is Hydroponics

Hydroponics is a method of farming where plants are grown in nutrient-filled water, rather than soil. This means growing plants in hydroponics can be stacked vertically, using up the space of a warehouse and filling the floor to the ceiling with plants.

They take up the same amount of space as a traditional field, but are much more space-efficient.

There are many benefits to using hydroponics over regular farming techniques.

For starters, hydroponics can be stacked vertically.

This allows for much more farming in the same amount of space.

Future Use of Hydroponics

Past Hydroponic Technologies

Hydroponics are shown to be able to sustainably feed all humans for the foreseeable future. Hydroponics use less water than traditional farmland.

In 1860, Julius Sachs published the "nutrient solution", which was a method of growing plants in water. In 1937, William F. Gericke took this method of growing plants in water to another level by describing how this could be used to grow crops in mass. Gericke also showed how the fluid dynamics of the water allowed the plant roots to pick up many more nutrients than traditional soil.

Current Use of Hydroponics

A common modern technology for growing plants with hydroponics is nutrient film. This technique was invented in 1965 by Allen Cooper. A nutrient film system is an active hydroponics system where water with a film of nutrients is pumped through trays that contain plant roots. These trays are angled to drain into lower trays until the solution is drained into a resevoir where it is pumped to the top tray to restart the process.

Hydroponics is currently used for growing herbs and vegetables, such as cucumbers and lettuce. Hydroponics is also used for cultivating ornamental crops.Knock their socks
