Class Distinction

Down further where the hydro lines end it’s different. Around Cheif Isaac’s house there’s a new satellite dish and a couple of newer trucks [...] But things do look different down where the hydro is and the ones who live down there kinda act different too (Wagamese 115-116).

  • The conditions on the reserve are far less pristine compared to the ways of living on the outskirts down by the hydro
  • This distinction and separation in terms of class also inflict different personalities among the people who reside in these areas
  • They have more privileges and a much easier way of life.

Self Discovery

  • Garnet continues on his journey of self-discovery as he begins to feel more in touch with his Indigenous roots.
  • With the help of Keeper as his guide and mentor, he has learned more about Indigenous culture and is no longer lost.

Most of the time I didn’t even know I was angry. Too lost, really. And I know I got lots to learn, but I don’t feel so lost anymore. I feel I really am home. For the first time ever(Wagamese 157).

Marxism

  • Class is a simple concept but it also leads to some of society's unsolved questions
  • Garnet notices the difference in the people down by the hydro instantly
  • “Down further where the hydro lines end it’s different. There’s a new satellite dish and a couple of newer trucks.” (Wagamese, 115)
  • They are almost modernized but still don’t want to lose their real identity
  • The other part of White Dog is described differently
  • “Small cabins peering through the trees with a bunch of old cars and trucks parked around the front. Trails leading off into the bush,” (Wagamese, 115)
  • The class system can be viewed when looking at White Dog which is also acknowledged by the characters

Historical Biographical

Critical Race Theory

  • Technology is rapidly evolving and so are socially accepted standards and values
  • At the time of the book, the views on Indigenous people were different
  • “Others were put into the residential schools and learned how to be ashamed of their heritage on account the priests and nuns taught them from day one that they were dirty, stupid and helpless as Indians” (Wagamese 129)
  • Now the views have flipped and the views on this book can
  • None of the views from the quote are accepted in society in this day and age
  • Colonization, Residential Schools, and Racism were all directly related to that time period
  • Racism is rooted into the system
  • Systemic racism was present against Indigenous people
  • Racism leads to anger
  • Anger leads to finding something to be angry at
  • Jackie found that thing and his target of hatred became white people
  • “Knowin’ you’re just trying to get back but hatin’ you because of the whiteness I can see all over you.” (Wagamese 156)
  • His anger even was directed at his brother because of the white influence on Garnet

Imagery

Onomatopoeia

  • Imagery is a literary device which uses descriptive language to describe visual pictures
  • Garnets attempts to capture the magic in the moment through the description of the colours in the sky
  • Connection of spiritual energy residing within nature
  • Onomatopoeia is a literary device used to imitate actions through words
  • In this quote we can see Keeper imitating a laugh by using “heh heh heh”. Funny guy that Keeper

Connections to Social Issues

Conflict Amoung Indigenous Residents in the Book

Real Life Equivalent

What is the Issue?

Conflict Amongst Indigenous Residents in the Book

Different Lifestyle Choices Made by White Dog Residents

  1. Live on the reserve, heavily connected to culture and traditions.
- Pro: Confident in their identity and are in a strong tight knit community where many traditional events are attended and celebrated.- Con: Lack physical luxuries as well as opportunities due to lack of funding. 2. Leave reserve to pursue a life in the outside world, referred to as “going mainstream”.- Pro: Provide yourself and your kid is with better life in terms of luxuries, living conditions and opportunity. - Con: Have to give up parts of their culture and traditions on account of the influence of the outside world. Their kids generally do not grow up knowing all the traditions.

Map

Connection to Real World

  • Many countries have a history of suffering, and still suffer due to colonialism
  • Countries in regions such as South America, Africa and South Asia are still not caught up with the western world when it comes to quality of life and also the financial aspect
  • As a result, many people choose to leave their native country for countries with more luxury

What is the Issue?

Staying connected with culture, and having a better sense of communityIn Garnet’s case, staying at White Dog

Having more luxurious living conditions and better opportunitiesIn Garnet’s case, staying in Toronto
