- The conditions on the reserve are far less pristine compared to the ways of living on the outskirts down by the hydro
- This distinction and separation in terms of class also inflict different personalities among the people who reside in these areas
- They have more privileges and a much easier way of life.
Self Discovery
- Garnet continues on his journey of self-discovery as he begins to feel more in touch with his Indigenous roots.
- With the help of Keeper as his guide and mentor, he has learned more about Indigenous culture and is no longer lost.
Most of the time I didn’t even know I was angry. Too lost, really. And I know I got lots to learn, but I don’t feel so lost anymore. I feel I really am home. For the first time ever(Wagamese 157).

Critical Race Theory
- Technology is rapidly evolving and so are socially accepted standards and values
- At the time of the book, the views on Indigenous people were different
- “Others were put into the residential schools and learned how to be ashamed of their heritage on account the priests and nuns taught them from day one that they were dirty, stupid and helpless as Indians” (Wagamese 129)
- Now the views have flipped and the views on this book can
- None of the views from the quote are accepted in society in this day and age
- Colonization, Residential Schools, and Racism were all directly related to that time period
- Racism is rooted into the system
- Systemic racism was present against Indigenous people
- Racism leads to anger
- Anger leads to finding something to be angry at
- Jackie found that thing and his target of hatred became white people
- “Knowin’ you’re just trying to get back but hatin’ you because of the whiteness I can see all over you.” (Wagamese 156)
- His anger even was directed at his brother because of the white influence on Garnet
