Questions about this movement

There was an increase in the numbers of sexual assault allegations, including false allegations.
  • Is the MeToo movement global?
The #MeToo hashtag has trended in at least 85 countries. It has encouraged people around the world to spread their stories of sexual assault. Before the MeToo movement went global, not many imagined that it would have taken off the way it did.

False reports of sexual assault are very rare, but when they happen, they are put in the spotlight for the public to see. This can give the false impression that most reported sexual assaults are false. However, false reports of sexual assault account for only 2% to 10% of all reports. These figures do not take into account that the majority of victims do not report when they are assaulted or harassed.
