Historical Marker

A historical marker means a sign to commemorate one or more persons, an event, a former use of a place, a person or place of historic interest, a century farm, or a similar designation. Indian Treaties of 1865

  • In 1865, peace was sought by both the Indians and the Americans.
  • In the year prior to 1865, the Cheyennes, Araphos, Kiowas, Apaches, and Comanches had 400 men, women, and children killed by a Colorado volunteer militia.
  • The treaties were placed to hopefully create peace and put an end to the hostilities between the two sides.
  • The U.S. Senate failed to ratify the agreements.
  • Peace was maintained for about 18 months before General Winfield Hancock led 1,400 soldiers to Fort Larned on a campaign against the Cheyennes and Araphos.
  • Two years after 1865, Little Arkansas Council (the same council from before), signed new treaties to stop the war, but those also failed to stop the wars on the plains.
  • Photo of the Little Arkansas Council, the photo was taken September 28, 1864.
  • "Two months before the Sand Creek Massacre, Cheyenne and Arapaho chiefs gathered at Camp Weld for a peace council with the U.S. Army and Colorado Territory officials...The chiefs thought they had complied with peace terms..." But Gov. John Evans and the militia commander John. M. Chivington were not satisfied and didn't tell them so, therefore the Sand Creek massacre occured. .
