Life on Land

15 LIfe on land

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

+ Info

Despite being one of the world's 18 megadiverse countries due to its rich diverse terrestrial fauna, the Philippines is also a biodiversity hotspot due to high numbers of endemic species becoming severely threatened in recent years. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Biodiversity Management Bureau collaborated on a project to identify the primary causes of biodiversity loss, particularly on land. In this project entitled, Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP), pollution was one of the identified causes. In the Philippines, solid waste has been the primary cause of land contamination.

Problem Statement

Saturday morning, especially about 10:00 a.m., waste of the Brgy. Sampaguita is collected in accordance to the barangay authorities' ordinance. Although this has proven a huge aid in controlling home garbage in the aforementioned barangay, proponents have identified a fundamental flaw in the system. Residents continue to dump their rubbish outside of the scheduled period. This is due to insufficient garbage collection services in Sampaguita Lipa City being only limited to once a week, which is resulting in unregulated dumping of rubbish, damaging the environment and creating health risks to inhabitants. This issue underscores the necessity for the city to improve waste management collection services in order to ensure appropriate garbage disposal and prevent environmental contamination that may affect local wildlife.

Proposed Solution

Many cities have implemented waste management systems, which involve collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of waste. However, these systems where not implemented in the said city or barangay that results to the problem that has stated. This is also often lack transparency and accountability, making it difficult to track the waste from its source to its final destination. With this context the researchers have come up to a study entitled “Trash Track: A Garbage Management Monitoring System. “This is a mobile garbage tracking system, which can provide real-time information about waste collection, transportation, and disposal. This system can be used by citizens, the admin of the waste management company, and government agencies to monitor the entire waste management process.

Proposed Solution

By tracking the waste, it can be ensured that it is being disposed of properly and safely at the scheduled time. The application can also help in identifying areas in the vicinity of Brgy. Sampaguita that require more attention, such as areas with high waste generation or illegal dumping. Furthermore, it can help in improving the efficiency of the waste management system by identifying and addressing bottlenecks in the process. Overall, this Garbage Management Monitoring System can be an effective solution to the solid waste management problem, by providing transparency, accountability, and efficiency to the waste management process.
