Les smilodons étaient un genre de félins qui vivaient peut-être en groupes hiérarchisés, ce qui constituerait un fait rare pour cette famille d'animaux qui à l'exception du lion actuel sont plutôt des chasseurs solitaires et territoriaux. S'il a existé plusieurs espèces différentes de smilodons, toutes avaient en commun une formidable paire de redoutables canines de 20 cm (28 cm chez la plus grande espèce !) qui leur ont valu leur surnom célèbre de 'tigres à dents de sabre' ! Les squelettes et restes fossiles de smilodons ont tous été retrouvés sur le continent américain où l'Homme a pu arriver par la Sibérie lors de la dernière période glaciaire (de - 110.000 à - 10.000 ans). Sachant que le smilodon aurait justement disparu à la fin de cette période, ils ont donc techniquement pu se croiser!
