01 AR Policies & Procedures ~ STM English Department

An Overview of Accelerated Reader (AR):

A Program by Renaissance Implemented by the STM English Department

Half of this grade (25 points) comes from the number of AR points you earned. You must earn 10 AR points to earn all 25 points. These points cannot come from any novels assigned as class reading. If you do not earn all 10 AR points, you will receive partial credit based on the number of points you have earned. The remaining 25 points of your AR quarterly grade reflect your performance (comprehension) on the test(s) taken that quarter. This score is an average of the scores of all tests taken that quarter including those tests taken for an optional AR grade. Point values and requirements may be changed at times due to the specific assignments given within a course. When in doubt, ask your English teacher.

Much of your high school reading is teacher-selected; the AR program allows you to explore your own interests and passions through the world of literature to better establish you as a lifelong reader. As a requirement for English I, II, III, and IV, you will select independent reading for which AR tests are available. Each quarter, you are required to earn 10 AR points; every book's reading practice quiz has a point value assigned based on the difficulty and the word count of the book. Your total AR grade is worth 50 points every quarter.

Finding AR Books

Over the years, the librarians and some of our faculty have written tests on books. These books are marked physically with a blue AR sticker in the STM library. A list of these tests can be found on the Library Moodle page and is linked here.

AR Bookfinder

AR Bookfinder allows you to search for any title to see whether or not Renaissance has written a test.

AR Sign-Up

with your English Teacher

At the beginning of every school year, your English teacher will go over their classroom procedures for AR sign-up. Books must be pre-approved for you to receive credit, so make sure to submit the book for approval at least one school day before testing throughout the quarter and at least five school days before the quarter reading deadline. For Summer Reading: Sign ups are not required, but students must consult the "testing restrictions" before assuming they will be able to take a test.

When & How to Take Your AR Tests

06 AR Policies & Procedures

When, where, & how do I take an AR test?

Testing takes place on campus in the library on special designated computers. Ask one of the librarians for assistance.

During the school year, for regular quarterly testing, students can come to the library anytime during our open hours (before/after school, during most lunches, and often during class periods) to take their AR tests. The librarians keep an updated calendar of the week posted, so students can see when the library is open for testing drop-ins. The Library Google calendar is regularly updated in case students would like to plan ahead for when they believe they will be ready to take their AR tests. AR tests for required summer reading and optional extra grades can be taken as early as one of the two days we are open during the summer and no later than your grade-level's deadline.
