Course Info

Course Name: Critical Fan StudiesCourse Instructor: Dr. Malone Course Description: This is a survey course to familiarize students with the field of fan and fandom studies. Students will be asked to critically engage with multiple fandoms, as well as participate within the fandom of their choice. This course will explore current debates within fandom, participatory culture, and fans as creators.

Objectives

1. Understand the history of fan/fandom studies
1. Students will be able to articulate past and current trends and schools of thought related to fan studies
2. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of current debates in the field
2. Critically analyze fan impact on media
1. Students will be able to describe, analyze, and critique fandom practices
2. Students will be able to evaluate and articulate these practices’ impact on the respective media and media landscapes
3. Maintain ongoing participation within a fandom
1. Students will be able to use digital media to create fanworks that reflect critical research
