Nirvana's Influenceon Everlong
Dave Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana before the creation of the Foo Fighters. It is clear that Grohl takes many elements you find in Nirvana’s music and transplants them into the Foo’s songs. "Everlong" particularly relates to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. The songs share a similar rhythm, and the lyrics follow a similar pattern, crescendoing at the chorus and decrescendoing at the verses. The drums sound extremely similar to each other with rapid symbols and pounding snares. The timbre of both songs is very punk rock-like. There is no doubt that Nirvana has influenced Grohl and the Foo Fighters.
Nirvana
- Bleach was the title given to their debut album. The band’s first album which featured Dave Grohl, was called Nevermind.
- Nirvana combined pop, heavy metal, and hard rock (Savage). Nirvana is one of the bands that introduced the grunge style of music.
- Extreme changes in tempo and volume expressed anger. Additionally, layering the orchestrations showed the many meanings that the songs should represent.
- There were internal tensions between Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl. Kurt did not believe that Dave was an adequate drummer or performer in general (Behr). This internal turmoil nearly caused the group to separate (Behr). Ultimately, Kurt Cobain's fatal overdose made the group disband (Behr).
Nirvana Greatest Hits
- Nirvana’s greatest hit was “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. It was a part of their hit album, Nevermind. The band first played their unrecorded song outside a small club in Seattle in 1991. They first publicly performed the song on Saturday Night Live (Rose).
- “Smells Like Teen Spirit” represents the era's political issues and traditional values. Nevermind, their breakthrough album, connected Generations X and post-baby boomers. (Savage). Although Nirvana did not identify as a musical group involved in politics, its music inspired listeners to counterbalance racism, homophobia, and sexism (Barrett).
- In this album they combined heavy metal and rock. The song itself follows a traditional song structure. Contrastingly, the guitar solo cycles the form 3 times. Because the guitar starts without a rhythm, the chorus is accentuated (Bhavyasm). “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is 5 minutes long, in F minor key, and is in 4/4 meter.
