How Learning Occurs
TheTheorists
Characteristics
- Behaviorism is a theory that uses experimental procedures to study observable behavior in a given environment rather than studying internal mental processes (Behaviorism, 2018).
- Behaviorism is based on the idea that behaviors can be influenced by the environment.
- Behaviorism is also known as the stimulus-response theory because behaviorists state that learning occurs when a student positively responds to external stimuli or incentives (Clark, 2018a).

How Learning Occurs
Characteristics
- Cognitivism is a theory in psychology that focuses on mental processes.
- Psychologists in this field focus on how a person processes information and how they monitor and manage their thinking by analyzing the results of the persons thinking and decision-making (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016).

How Learning Occurs
Characteristics
- Constructivism is a theory that focuses on learners building their own knowledge.
- It is known as discovery learning.
- Constructivism is considered to be part of cognitivism to a certain degree because they both believe learning focuses on mental activity (Ertmer & Newby, 2013).
- Constructivists believe that learners use their prior knowledge and experiences to relate to new information to make sense of the content.
