How has climate change impacted this area?
What is currently being done to help combat or remedy the situation?
Venice
In Venice, one of the most obvious effects of climate change has been the rise in the frequency and intensity of "acqua alta" floods. These floods, which occurs when tides are extremely high, have been occurring more regularly recently. The greatest flooding Venice had seen in 50 years occurred in 2019, with water levels rising by more than six feet above mean sea level. The floods disrupted citizens' and companies' daily lives and severely damaged buildings, infrastructure, and cultural heritage sites.
MOSE Project: This is a major engineering project aimed at protecting Venice from high tides and storm surges. The project involves the construction of a series of mobile barriers that can be raised from the seabed to block incoming tides during high water events. The barriers are designed to protect the city from water levels up to 3 meters above sea level.Improved drainage and water management: Venice has a complex network of canals, sewers, and pumping stations that are designed to manage water flow through the city. Efforts are underway to improve these systems to better manage floodwater and reduce the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Where else in the world is experiencing a similar form of climate change?
Kiribati: This small island nation in the Pacific Ocean is facing an existential threat from sea level rise. The country's highest point is just 3 meters above sea level, and rising sea levels are causing saltwater intrusion into freshwater supplies, damaging crops, and forcing people to relocate.
How does this affect the region around it?
What effects does it have globally?
Loss of biodiversity: Kiribati is home to a unique and diverse ecosystem, including coral reefs and marine life. The impacts of climate change, including sea level rise and ocean acidification, can have a devastating impact on these ecosystems. This loss of biodiversity can have global implications, as it can affect fisheries, tourism, and scientific research in the region.
Economic impacts: Kiribati is a small island nation that relies heavily on fishing and tourism for its economy. Rising sea levels and flooding can damage fisheries and coral reefs, reducing fish stocks and tourism opportunities. Displacement of people: As sea levels rise and flooding increases, many people in Kiribati may be forced to relocate to other parts of the country or migrate to other countries.
