San Francisco bay was inhabited by Indian tribes for thousands of years. When the Spanish arrived in California, it was already inhabited by the Mojave and other Yuma-speaking tribes. On January 30, 1847, the Americans changed the name of Yerba Buena to that of "San Francisco". In the 1990s, San Francisco became home to numerous new technology companies that took advantage of Silicon Valley's proximity. Nowadays, San Francisco is the technological, economic and cultural center of California, rivaling Los Angeles. It has always been associated with alternative movements and is considered one of the most open cities in the United States.
