Safeguarding at WAGGGS means the actions we take to prevent harm and promote the welfare of the children and young people we work with and for. Of particular importance is the need to create safe and supportive spaces for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to participate in our work, to reduce risks and for any (safety and welfare) concerns to be raised and responded to.

'Protecting the organisations reputation' is not the correct answer

While we will always consider the reputation of WAGGGS in our safeguarding work, the safety and welfare of children and young people is the primary focus of our safeguarding policy and practice.

'Providing specialist care to vulnerable people' is not the correct answer

WAGGGS policy is designed to protect and support WAGGGS target group of children and young people up to the age of 30. It does not detail how we safely work with vulnerable children or adults who's ability to protect themselves from harm is diminished due to a disability (mental or physical), age or any other condition or illness. If you plan to work with vulnerable children or adults, please talk with your line manager or lead volunteer to risk assess and put into place special measures to support their safety and well-being.

Please click on which option below you think is correct
1. Any detrimental effect on an individual’s physical, psychosocial, or emotional wellbeing.
2. When someone is offended by another persons actions
3. When a person receives special emergency care or assistance

Go to next question

Correct!

In WAGGGS Safeguarding Policy, harm is defined as any detrimental effect on an individual’s physical, psychosocial, or emotional wellbeing.

'When someone is offended by another persons actions' is not the correct answer

Being offended often leads to feelings of upset or anger that are not long lasting. This is not an accurate description of harm which often causes fear, alarm, injury or distress to a person.

try again

'When a person receives special emergency care or assistance' is not the correct answer

While everyone who experiences harm may require special care or asistance, this is not an accurate defintion as they may not be (or feel able) to access this support. The effects of harm may also be self managed and hidden by a person who feels unable to speak out.

Correct!

Abuse is defined as any action or inaction resulting in actual or potential harm to a person. There are many forms of abuse which include but are not limited to Physical abuse - any contact resulting in discomfort, pain or injury; Emotional abuse – any action or inaction that causes mental anguish; Sexual abuse or exploitation – any form of sexual activity without consent; Financial or material abuse; any use of a person’s money or possessions without permission; Online abuse – any form of abuse that happens while interacting with digital technologies; Neglect – the failure to identify and/or meet care needs.

'When someone intentionally sets out to hurt a someone else' is not the correct answer

Intention is not an accurate definition of abuse as it is a subjective state of mind. Instead, it is important to focus on impact (actual or potential harm) caused to a person. Abuse may also be unintentional by failing to act on a concern or by being unaware of the harm caused by their behaviour.

'When you don't follow the safeguarding guidelines' is not the correct answer.

Our Safeguarding Policy is here to ensure that all WAGGGS activities are as safe as possible. While our policy and processes must be followed and taken seriously by all Global Team Members and failure to comply with guidance may be subject to disciplinary action, this is not how abuse is definited at WAGGGS.

Why do we have safeguarding principles?

They are here to help guide our behaviour as we implement our policy and remind us of the beliefs and purpose behind our safeguarding work.

Correct!

This is not a safeguarding concern but it does require action

It is important to understand why the volunteer has stopped participating. If there are any concerns around their safety or welfare as a result of working with WAGGGS, such as the impact of their work on their mental health, this should be raised with a member of the safeguarding team and addressed with the volunteer's line manager.

Yes, this is a safeguarding concern

Any information which suggests improper conduct or relationships with participants should be immediately raised to a member of the Safeguarding Team, either directly or via your line manager or lead volunteer. Remember that it is not your role to establish any facts or information about a person’s behaviour and if you are in doubt, report it. Any reports found to have been made not made in good faith may be subject to disciplinary action.

Yes, this is a safeguarding concern and should be reported.

A person’s name, country and village are classed as Personal Identifiable Information (PII). Each of these pieces of data belongs to the person we collect it from, it is part of their identity and owned by them. That is why when a person’s data is used to commit fraud, it is called ‘identity theft.’ Identity theft is a growing problem around the world. Fraudsters only need a few pieces of information to impersonate or scam someone out of money. Mismanagement of data can also cause significant safeguarding concerns. Personal information freely available online can easily be used to trick people into exploitative work or cause significant emotional or reputational harm which limit rights and freedoms. In this case, this article could be used to identify, locate and contact the girl directly, who may be targeted for her views against the opening of the oil refinery. Just like a person’s physical belongings, if we wish to use someone’s personal information (data) we need to ask their permission and document this using a consent form. We may collect minimal amounts of personal data without permission, but only if this does not pose any privacy risks and we can show a legitimate reason for doing so.

No, this is not a safeguarding concern

Any issues with project delivery should be addressed with your Line Manager or Lead Volunteer
