Rich Uncle Pennybags

TIMELINE

Lizzie Magie created the game with the hopes that it would deter the public from monopolization and received the patent in 1904. It was then called The Landlord’s Game and she self-published the game in 1906.

Part One: Landlord's Game & Finance

Landlord’s Game was published in the UK as “Brer Fox an’ Brer Rabbit.

1909

1924

1913

1903

Magie approached Parker Brothers, America toy and game manufacturer, but was rejected due to the game being too complicated.

Lizzie Magie repatented The Landlord’s Game under her married name, Elizabeth Magie Phillips, and made street names based in Chicago (i.e. The Loop and Lake Shore Drive).

TIMELINE

Part Two: The Darrows and The Parker Bros

Daniel W. Layman commercially produced and sold his own handmade versions based on streets in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was called “The Fascinating Game of Finance”.

Licensing rights for Monopoly in Europe and British Commonwealth was given to Waddington Games. Popular in UK and France but not in Germany as it was denounced by the Nazi Party.

Charles Darrow and his wife and son, Edith Darrow and William Darrow, after being taught “Finance”, created and distributed Monopoly in its most recognizable form with Atlantic-City-themed streets.

1935

1939-1970

1936-1938

1932-1933

Parker Brothers reconsidered and bought the game on March 18. Also bought Magie’s 1924 patent when discovering Darrow was not the sole inventor for 500 USD (now worth 11,015 USD).Then bought the rights to “Finance”. Monopoly was marketed on a broad scale in both Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition.

Allegedly, a WW2 special version of Monopoly was created. It came with a compass, files, and real currency hidden amongst the Monopoly money.

Part Three: HASBRO

1976

The game Anti-Monopoly was published and the creator was sued. The case brought to light the history of Monopoly before Charles Darrow.

1991

2005

Hasbrow acquired Parker Bros and thus Monopoly

Monopoly Here and Now edition caused the massive boom and propagation of global editions and no-cash boards.

Intent VS Result

Landlord's Game (Lizzie Magie)

  • intended to have 2 different sets of rules: anti-monopolist and monopolist.
  • To provoke feelings of unfairness in competitors and realize the moral superiority of the anti-monopolist rules.
  • Anti-monopolist version was won when poorest player doubled their stakes

Monopoly (Charles Darrow and many others)

  • Only monopolist rules exist, either increasing the stakes via money or difficulty
  • House rules are usually played, which differ from the official rules stated by Parker Bros.
  • Game is won by a single player, rather than communal effort

Official RULES

  • Each player starts with $1500, in denominations of 2x$500, 2x$100, 2x$50, 6x$20, 5x$10, 5X$5, and 5x$1
  • Someone must be banker, does not need to be a player. Bank cannot go broke and pays salaries, and bonuses, and collects all taxes, fines, and interests
  • Players roll the dice to determine the order. Players start at GO
  • GO gives the player their salary $200 once per around the board
  • If landing on an unowned property, the player can buy it from the Bank at the printed price and receive the Title Deed card.
  • If the player does not want to buy, an auction is held for the other players at any starting price.
  • If a player lands on an owned property, they must pay rent unless the property is mortgaged. Mortgaged spaces cannot collect rent.
  • Owner may also not collect rent if they fail to remember to ask for it.
  • Holding ALL Title Deed cards in a color group allows the player to collect double rent.
  • If a player receives a "Get Out of Jail Free" card and does not wish to use it, they can sell it to another player.
  • You may still sell/buy and collect rent while in Jail.
  • Landing on Income Tax forces players to either pay $200 or 10% of all their cash and property worths.
  • Once all properties in a color group are owned, players may buy houses. Once 4 houses are achieved at all properties, then hotels are available.
  • Players lose if they owe more money they can pay to any player or to the Bank
