Marie Curie

Marie Curie was a famous scientist who discovered two new chemical elements – radium and polonium. She carried out the first research into the treatment of tumors with radiation, and she founded the Curie Institutes, which are important medical research centers. She is also the only person who has won Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry.

Josef Mengele

Josef Rudolf Mengele, also known as the Angel of Death, was a German officer and doctor during World War II. He performed deadly experiments on prisoners at the Auschwitz II (Birkenau), where he was a member of the team of doctors who selected victims to be killed in the gas chambers. There he saw the opportunity to conduct genetic research on human subjects.

Josef Mengele

quote

"The twins were dying from some of the experiments. We were told they had become “very sick.” Then Mengele would simply replace them with fresh sets of twins who had just arrived on transport trains (…) Not even Mengele’s favorites were treated as humans. We were replaceable. Disposable."

quote

“That night Lale tries to wash the dried blood from his shirt, he partially succeeds, but then decides a stain will be an appropriate reminder of the day he met Mengele. A doctor, who will cause more pain than he eases.”
