Earth Day is a day that is supposed to inspire more awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. It takes place each year on April 22. It now takes place in more than 193 countries around the world. During Earth Day, the world encourages everyone to turn off all unwanted lights.
It was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. U Thant, the Secretary-General of United Nations at that time, has recognized it. While the first Earth Day focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 countries. Its name and concept were created by John McConnell in 1960 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco.
On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, China, and some 120 other countries. This signing satisfied a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.
Numerous communities engaged in Earth Day Week actions, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that the world faces.
On Earth Day 2020, over 100 million people around the world observed the 50th anniversary in what is being referred to as the largest online mass mobilization in history. This day is celebrated as an international event in 193 countries but due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021, too, world movement has gone digital and can be accessed all year long! Ten Simple Things You Can Do to Help Protect the Earth (2nd part) 6. Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag. 7. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also flip the light switch off when you leave the room! 8. Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change. 9. Don't send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office. 10. Bike more. Drive less.
