In this course we’ll make sure you can log into the portal, access your Zoom classroom, open your lesson in Acrobat Reader, request assistance during class and find daily topics on the lesson calendar so you can be prepared for your first class!

Lesson 1 - Preparation

In this lesson, you’ll prepare your system to log in, then learn how to address access issues. You’ll also get set up with Acrobat Reader so that you’re always ready to teach the lesson content!

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Access the Teaching Portal via Chrome.
• Allow Chrome pop-ups from the portal in order to access lesson content.
• Download lesson content via Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Activating your account

Email

By now, you've received your faculty activation email. Look for the subject line “Your New Open English Junior Account is Ready.” Check your spam folder if you don't see it. You won't have any classes yet, but let's be sure you can log in! You can always access the Junior Teaching Portal from the quick links on the Teacher Hub, but for now, just click the button below and enter your portal credentials.

Google Chrome

For both PC and Mac users, we recommend using Chrome as your web browser while teaching. If you already have Chrome installed, make sure it is up to date.

Updating Chrome:

1. Open Chrome on your computer.
2. At the top right, click the three bullet icon.
3. Click Help, then click About Google Chrome.
4. You’ll see the current version number beneath the Google Chrome heading. Chrome will check for updates here and let you know if it is up to date.
5. Click Relaunch to apply update if necessary.

Access Issues

If you have trouble with your username or password when teaching, contact the Senior Monitor on duty via Slack, our messaging system, for help. Use the oe-sm-on-duty channel.

Teaching Portal Pop-ups

Pop-up Permission

Allow the Teaching Portal to open your lesson content once you click the Join button. Follow the steps below to add the Teaching Portal to your allowed sites.

1. Open Chrome Settings using the three bullets in the top right corner.
2. Locate the heading Privacy and security on the left side of the window.
3. Click on Site settings.
4. Scroll down to the Content heading and click on Pop-ups and redirects.
5. Under Allowed to send pop-ups or use redirects, click the Add button.
6. Copy/paste this address into the box: https://portal.openenglish.com:443
7. Click the blue Add button

Lesson 2- Connecting to Class and Content

Now that you’ve set everything up to access your classroom and lesson material, we’ll introduce you to the Teaching Portal dashboard. We’ll show you how to enter your classroom on time and share the lesson content. You’ll also learn when and how to ask for assistance from our Support Team.

This is where you will log in at the beginning of each scheduled shift. From here, you are assigned classes to teach.

Assigned Classes

You will never know ahead of time how many, what type or what level of classes you may be assigned during a shift regardless of what your schedule may say. Various factors determine how classes are assigned, such as student demand and teacher availability. Take a look at the possible class combinations you could teach during any two-hour shift.

MCER Nivel A2 = PC Nivel 3 y 4

MCER Nivel A1 = PC Nivel 1 y 2

Nuestros estudiantes de clase privada de nivel 3 y 4 caen en el nivel A2 MCER. Los estudiantes pueden:

• Comprender palabras y frases de uso frecuente relacionadas con información personal (familia, compras, ciudad, trabajo).
• Captar el punto principal en mensajes simples.
• Entender las conversaciones sociales, pero lucha por mantenerlas en marcha.
• Comunicar tareas rutinarias e ideas básicas.
• Describir el trabajo, la familia, los antecedentes educativos, la profesión y los arreglos de vivienda.

Nuestros estudiantes de nivel 1 y 2 de clase privada caen en el nivel A1 MCER. Estudiantes:

• Puede reconocer palabras o frases familiares sobre sí mismo, su familia o su entorno inmediato.
• Pueden interactuar de una manera muy básica y pueden presentarse.
• Puede describir personas, ciudades y cosas que le gustan.
• Puede formular preguntas y oraciones si se le da suficiente tiempo.
• Requiere repetición y un ritmo lento del habla.

Comprendiendo los niveles del MCER

Los niveles de nuestros estudiantes se basan en el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia (MCER), que establece el estándar de la industria para lo que tu estudiante puede hacer en cada nivel.

MCER Nivel B2 = PC Nivel 7 y 8

MCER Nivel B1 = PC Nivel 5 y 6

Nuestros estudiantes de clase privada de nivel 7 y 8 caen en el nivel B2 del MCER. Los estudiantes pueden:

• Comprender discursos extensos, podcasts y conferencias.
• Seguir argumentos sobre temas familiares.
• Comprender películas, programas de televisión y noticias en un dialecto estándar.
• Participar en conversaciones con hablantes nativos y participar activamente en discusiones sobre temas familiares en contextos familiares.
• Realizar descripciones detalladas sobre una gama más amplia de temas y discuta los pros y los contras de las diferentes opiniones.

Nuestros estudiantes de clase privada de nivel 5 y 6 se encuentran en el nivel B1 del MCER. Los estudiantes pueden:

• Comprender un discurso claro y estándar sobre temas familiares.
• Comprender programas de radio y televisión sobre temas familiares cuando el habla es relativamente lenta.
• Manejar situaciones familiares mientras viaja en áreas donde se habla inglés.
• Participar en conversaciones sobre temas personales.
• Explicar experiencias, ambiciones, esperanzas y sueños.
• Describir sentimientos, ideas y opiniones personales.
• Resumir tramas de películas o libros.

Confirma tu presencia

El botón de confirmación permanece inactivo hasta cinco minutos antes de su turno programado. Si no confirmas dentro de cinco minutos, la ventana de confirmación pasará y no recibirás un Unirse a una clase. Las siguientes imágenes muestran los estados de confirmación.
