This slave ship evokes the idea of the slave ship model that we looked at in class. The first slave ship was built in 1636. Martinez and Hall are calling attention to the prolification of the image of a slave ship through the structure of this page. This is both obvious, as the scene is taking place on a literal slave ship, but it also stands to represent the overall oppression that these people are facing. This is due to the confining boxes in which the scene takes place. The scene doesn't make use of all of the full page, opting only to utilize the shape of the ship.
Martinez uses cross hatching not only as an artistic choice but also a symbolic one. The only characters with cross hatching serving to add dimension to their skin are the people of color shown in this graphic novel. This goes directly against the common theme of only white characters being "fleshed out" in media. In Wake, not only are the Black characters fleshed out, but they are the only ones to be so detailed. This stands in opposition from the historically racist view of Black characters, for example the horrific "golliwog". This was originally a book character created for children, but it obviously was received poorly and used for more sinister intentions.
The way this page is oriented in the shape of a ship shows a few things. It sets up the conversation between the characters not only as linear, but it also slowly reveals the sheer amount of people in the ship listening in on this conversation, finally reaching the bottom of the ship as they prepare to break free. This is significant because of how it reveals information in a way that is both interesting and adds to the tension of the scene. The original slave ship model does the same, as it reveals more and more people as the model is dissected further.
