The fire started in the town of Paradise and spread quickly due to high winds and dry conditions, destroying the town within hours. 18000 structures were destroyed and the fire caused at least 85 fatalities. The cause of the fire is attributed to faulty electrical transmission lines owned by Pacific Gas and Electric.
There is national and global concern over how fire regimes have changed in the past few decades and how they will change in the future . In the western United States, there is strong evidence that regional warming and drying, including that directly attributed to anthropogenic climate change, are linked to increased fire frequency and size and longer fire seasons.
The Camp Fire
Since the early 1970s, California's annual wildfire extent increased fivefold, punctuated by extremely large and destructive wildfires in 2017 and 2018. This trend was mainly due to an eightfold increase in summertime forest‐fire area and was very likely driven by drying of fuels promoted by human‐induced warming.
Australia had experienced wildfires due to dryer than normal conditions, displacing many people, killing a staggering amount of wildlife, and destroying structures.
The Camp Fire was a devastating wildfire that occurred in Northern California in November 2018. It is considered to be one of the deadliest wildfires in California’s history.
