SYMMETRY
Symmetry is the balanced distribution of equivalent forms and spaces on either side of a dividing line or plane. Symmetry creates a sense of order and stability.
- Bilateral symmetry: The property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane
- Radial symmetry: The property of being similar halves by passing a plane at any anglearound the central axis.
AXIS
An axis is a straight line established by two points in a space, about which forms and spaces can be arranged in a symmetrical or balanced manner.
HIERARCHY
Hierarchy refers to the articulation of elements based on their importance or function. This can be achieved through variations in size, shape, or placement to emphasize certain spaces or forms.
Hierarchy by shape
Hierarchy by size
Hierarchy by placement
RHYTM
A unifying movement characterized by a patterned repetition or alternation of formal elements or motifs in the same or modified form
DATUM
A line, or volume that by its continuity and regularity, serves to gather, measure, and organize a pattern of forms and spaces.
TRANSFORMATION
An architectural concept or organization can be altered through a series of discrete manipulations and permutations in response to a specific context or set of conditions without a loss of identity
