OVERVIEW

We will study how the brain and the gut work together to keep us strong and healthy. We will also learn the parts of the digestive system and discover how food affects us mentally and physically.

the gut-brain axis

Your brain and gut are always talking to each other. But did you know that your gut sends more signals to your brain than your brain does to your gut?
The link between the brain and the gut is called the gut-brain axis. This link allows your brain and gut to work together to handle and understand your thoughts and feelings.

Are you a moody foodie?

What foods do you eat when you are happy, sad, or mad?
The foods you eat do more than just keep your body healthy and strong. Food also affects how you think and feel.
You have a great brain for learning. But do you have a good appetite for a quiz?

THE MOUTH is the opening to the digestive (die-jes-tiv) tract, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva (suh-lie-vuh) as the first step in digestion (die-jeh-shun).

13

THE PHARYNX (fah-rinx) is also called the throat. Food passes from the mouth through the pharynx.

14

THE ESOPHAGUS (ee-sah-fuh-gus) carries food from the pharynx (fah-rinx) to the stomach.

15

THE STOMACH has 3 main jobs:
  1. It stores food.
  2. It uses acids to break food down.
  3. It softens food so it can pass to the small intestine.

16

THE SMALL INTESTINE (in-teh-stin) takes the things your body needs from the food you eat and puts them into the bloodstream, which sends them to the rest of the body.

17

THE LARGE INTESTINE takes water and salt from anything not used by the body and then removes undigested (un-die-jes-ted) food as solid waste.

18

THE RECTUM is at the end of the large intestine. The rectum receives and holds the stool (solid waste) until the body needs to push it out through a bowel movement.

19

THE ANUS marks the end of the digestive (die-jes-tiv) tract, where stool is pushed from the rectum into the anal canal so the it can exit the body.

20

THE Solid Organs OF THE DIGESTIVE TRACT

21

THE LIVER's main jobs are:
  • to clean the blood
  • to release bile that breaks down fats
  • to change food into energy (eh-ner-jee)

22

THE GALLBLADDER (gawl-blad-der) stores bile until the bile is needed for digestion (die-jeh-shun).

23

THE PANCREAS (pan-kree-us) changes sugars to energy (en-er-jee). It also breaks down sugars, fats, and starches (star-ches).

24

The Nervous System

25

The two divisions of the autonomic nervous system are the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system.
