SECTION 1

Bilbo's Philosophy

01

Utilitarianism Philosophy

Traits and Text Evidence

People who believe in the Utilitarianism Philosophy have the traits of being heroic, being caring, and being aware of others. Also, these people try to live their lives in a way where their decisions and actions are based on the majority of the people around them.

“Thorin and Company to Burglar Bilbo greeting! For your hospitality our sincerest thanks, and for your offer of professional assistance our grateful acceptance”(Tolkien 51). The quote reveals that Bilbo accepted the dwarves' request for him to join the adventure. This indicates that Bilbo believes in the utilitarianism philosophy since it is all about doing the right thing for the majority of the people, and Bilbo displays that. He displays this by agreeing to help the dwarves/majority of the people on their adventure. The quote also demonstrates how Bilbo is willing to exhibit the trait of being caring and the trait of being willing to be of assistance. These traits can be identified in someone who believes in the utilitarianism philosophy meaning that Bilbo also believes in the utilitarianism philosophy.

Bilbo's Behaviors and Motivations Based on His Philosophy

02

BehavIORS and Motivations

The quote, "[h]e had precious little time, he knew, before the spiders were disgusted and came back to their trees where the dwarves were hung. In the meanwhile he had to rescue them"(Tolkien 145), demonstrates Bilbo's philosophy, and it demonstrates how his philosophy influences his behaviors. Thie quote represents how he is always basing his actions and behaviors according to the majority of the people, and this leads to his behavior of rushing into risky situations in order to save his friends/majority of the people which is seen in the quote.

The quote, "[h]e had precious little time, he knew, before the spiders were disgusted and came back to their trees where the dwarves were hung. In the meanwhile he had to rescue them"(Tolkien 145), exemplifies Bilbo's Utilitarianism philosophy and how it makes him perform actions based on the majority of the people, and in the adventure, that majority of the people is the dwarves. Therefore, wanting to help the dwarves is his main motivation for his actions, and that motivation is the result of his philosophy.

How Bilbo's Behaviors and Motivations Influenced the Plot EVents and Resolutions

Motivations and BehaviorsInfluence On Plot EVents

The quote, "[t]here they would have all been killed, if it had not been for Bilbo once again"(Tolkien 185), indicates that Bilbo's heroic behaviors instrumentally affect the plot since his behaviors and actions are what's keeping the dwarves alive throughout most of the events in the book. In this quote's part of the novel, Bilbo helps the dwarves escape from the antagonistic dragon, Smaug. This event happens near the climax and falling action of the book, and if it weren't for Bilbo's heroic behaviors, the ending of this book would probably be much more drastic and unsatisfying since the dwarves would probably be dead.

The quote,“'[l]et’s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes'"(Tolkien 43), displays one of Bilbo's motivations which is to live up to the dwarves' and Gandalf's expectations and to be of help to them as a burglar. Later in the book, the quote, [a]bove him the sleeping dragon lay, a dire menace even in his sleep. He grasped a great two-handled cup, as heavy as he could carry...Then Bilbo fled"(Tolkien 183), represents the climax part in the book's plot events. It is where he succeeds in his role as a burglar and where he steals from the antagonist, Smaug. This plot event happens because of Bilbo's motivation of wanting to help Gandalf and the dwarves and of wanting to live up to their expectations. Without this motivation, the climax would be much more different.

Motivations and BehaviorsInfluence On Resolutions

The quote, “[Bilbo] did not at all like the look of the cavern-mouth, and he only made up his mind not to desert his friends just in time to scuttle over at the heels of the last elves, before the great gates of the king closed behind them with a clang”(Tolkien 152), reveals that Bilbo wants to go into the Elvin Kingdom in order to save the dwarves from their captured situation, but he is conflicted since he is also afraid of going. The quote also accentuates that Bilbo is able to overcome his fears because of his strong motivation of wanting to help and of wanting to be loyal to his friends/dwarves. This eventually leads to him going into the Kingdom, and he is able to free the dwarves from their captured situation. In short, Bilbo's motivation of wanting to save the dwarves helped him overcome his fears, and he was able to resolve the conflict.

The quote, "[h]e had precious little time, he knew, before the spiders were disgusted and came back to their trees where the dwarves were hung. In the meanwhile he had to rescue them"(Tolkien 145), exemplifies Bilbo's heroic behavior of rushing into risky situations in order to save the dwarves. The dwarves were trapped by the spiders in this situation, and Bilbo demonstrates the behavior of rushing in to save the dwarves from the spiders. Because of this heroic behavior, Bilbo was able to free the trapped dwarves from the spiders. To sum it up, Bilbo's heroic behavior led to him being able to resolve the conflict.
