Introduction

Communication and culture influence how we relate to others, what we think about them, and what kind of relationship we will have with them. Understanding is more than just the words we say and having a common language.

General information about the country

Population of Ethnic Ukrainians in Ukraine by Oblast (2001)

Ukrainian Culture

Ukraine has a long history, and some cultural differences and the way of perception may differ from other European countries. Ukrainians are extremely generous and hospitable. All social occasions include food. Ukrainians tend to be outgoing, warm, and sociable, so initiating a conversation with a Ukrainian is not difficult.

Meetings and Greetings

The typical greeting is a warm, firm handshake, maintaining direct eye contact, and repeating your name. If you arrive late, a short apology is welcomed. Many Ukrainians prefer to maintain a serious disposition in professional settings. However, adding a joke or two of your own can put them at ease.

Communication Style

Most Ukrainians have quite a direct communication style – irony and sarcasm are not used frequently in everyday conversation. Ukrainians may feel uncomfortable discussing finances or negotiating prices.

Generally, Ukrainians are pragmatic realists – this means that in discussions, they will focus more on existing problems rather than the search for solutions.
