Black History Month MALCOLM X A legacy of activism
EARLY LIFE AND CONVERSION
CHILDHOOD AND FAMILY Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925. His father was killed when he was young and his mother struggled to raise her family alone.Malcolm was a bright child, but struggled in school and eventually dropped out.
CRIMINAL ACTIVITY As a young man, Malcolm X moved to Boston and became involved in criminal activity. He was arrested and incarcerated for robbery in 1946.
CONVERSION AND NATION OF ISLAM While in prison, Malcolm joined the Nation of Islam and converted to Islam. He emerged from prison as a transformed man and began advocating for Black community. His arabic name is El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz
NAME CHANGE After leaving prison, Malcolm changed his name to Malcolm X to symbolize his lost slave name.
MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
In 1954, he became a leader of a mosque in Chicago, only two years after being released from prison.
He was largely responsible for increasing the Muslim population in America from 500 in 1952 to over 30,000 in 1963
He was a persuasive orator, and he became nationally known after a local Nation of Islam television program, The Hate That Hate Produced, aired in 1959, where he was interviewed. The organization was until then little known. Following the broadcast, media interest in the organization and in Malcolm X grew considerably. The press, radio and television broadcasts in the United States and then throughout the world regularly seek out and transcribe his most significant statements.
He founded a newspaper for the Nation of Islam, which was called Muhammad Speaks, established in 1957. The paper was very popular for the Nation of Islam and is still published today, though is now called Muslim Journal.
