Ground cabinets In this cupboard, you will find everything you need in order to measure a patient's blood pressure. There are oscillometric machines, doppler machines and blood pressure cuffs.

Green Trolley In this trolley, you will find a whole range of 'disposables' from IV catheters, tape, bandaging material and ECG pads.

Green Trolley In this trolley, you will find a whole range of 'disposables' from IV catheters, tape, bandaging material and ECG pads.

Grey metal cabinet In these drawers, you will find injectable drugs that do not need to be refrigerated or in the DD cabinet e.g. meloxicam, dexamethasone, calcium gluconate, and more. This rotation provides a great opportunity for you to practice calculating drug doses, drawing these medications up, and administering them to your patients. But don't forget - to get your drug doses checked before giving these to a patient.

Top cupboard You will find lots of things in this area but is most useful for your to know that there are a variety of SNAP tests located here (or at least the ones that do not need to be kept in the fridge) - so we can test patients in the ward for diseases such as lungworm and parvovirus.

There are 3 sinks in the ICU ward - don't forget to wash your hands before and after handling every patient.

Blood gas machine The blood gas machine allows us to check the acid-base balance of patients in the ICU ward. Only the nurses and the interns have the code to use the machine, so please ask a member of staff if you would like to be shown how to use this equipment.

Top Cupboard This cupboard contains much of what you need to run a 'minimum database' for our emergency cases such as PCV tubes, microscope slides, urine dipsticks and a refractometer.

Centrifuge ICU's centrifuge is located here. Many of the patients will require regular checks of their PCV and TS, so this rotation provides an excellent opportunity to consolidate this skill.

Countertop fridge The fridge on top of the counter is where ICU's blood products are stored. They are kept in their own fridge as they need to be stored at a very specific temperature. You may be asked to monitor patients while they receive their blood transfusions. Do you know the signs of a transfusion reaction? (See answer below) Answer: Different signs will be see with different types of reactions. But concerning signs include tachycardia, tachypnoea, pyrexia, pink urine, pink serum and urticaria. If you have any concerns about a patient that you are caring for in the ICU ward, please just tell a member of staff - it is better to be safe than sorry!

Bottom cupboard This cupboard contains everything we will need in order to administer a blood transfusion such as blood typing kits and giving sets with filters.

Dangerous Drugs (DD) Cabinet In this cabinet, you will find Schedule 2 and some schedule 3 drugs. A member of staff in ICU will have the key for the DD cabinet and it will remain locked when it is not in use. If your patient needs a medication which is stored in the DD cabinet. Please ask a member of staff. This rotation provides a great opportunity for you to practice calculating drug doses, drawing these medications up, and administering them to your patients. But don't forget - to get your drug doses checked before giving these to a patient.

Crash kit Here you will find a set of metal drawers containing everything that is needed to run a crash from ET tubes, adrenaline and a defibrillator.

This is ICU's crash table. It is important to keep it in the same space and clear at all times to ensure there is an appropriate space available to perform CPR. Can you find the buttons to hit to sound the crash alarm?

Cat POD Trolleys In the trolley on the left, you will find a whole range of 'disposables' from IV catheters, tape, and bandaging material. The trolley on the right contains possessions belonging to each feline inpatient e.g. special treats and oral medications.

You will find a range of equipment along this wall from multi-parameter monitors, portable ultrasound machines and the the cardiac telemetry unit (this allows a patient's ECG to be displayed remotely).

Intravenous fluids Here you will find many of the things you need to place a patient on intravenous fluids such as giving sets, 0.9%NaCl and Hartmanns.

Over here, a trolley of clear plastic drawers is used to store each patient's belongings such as their hospital leads, their hospital harness and any oral medications that they may be taking. And above you will find the files for each patient in ICU. So if you need to look back at any of their paperwork - this is the place to look! Top tip - before taking your patient out to toilet, check their hospital form to check whether it is ok to use a slip lead (as this can be contraindicated in some conditions) and whether a urine sample needs to be collected.

IDEXX hAEMATOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY ANALYSER ICU's bench-top haematology and biochemistry analyser is located here. Most bloods are sent to the onsite laboratory, but when results are needed very quickly or in the 'out-of-hours' setting - many blood parameters can be obtained from this machine. You are not expected to know how to use this , but if you would like to be shown, please just ask a member of staff.

ICU Fridge Here you will find most items that need to be kept in the fridge e.g. blood samples that need to be stored, some SNAP tests and medications e.g. insulin and local anaesthetic eye drops.

There are 2 computers in ICU ward - so you can check RxWorks to see when your cases are due to arrive. But do try to keep these PC's available for other members of staff; if you need to study, there are PC's in the student barn, library, and Pearson building.

This examination table can be used for any procedures on canine patients that would be better suited to a table e.g. IV catheter placement. We will also use this table for the stabilisation of emergency cases. Have you thought about what you would get ready for your patient's admission?

  • IV catheter equipment, including several lengths of tape and pre-prepped flush
  • Blood sampling equipment, including EDTA, plain, heparin tubes and separate blood gas syringe
  • An oxygen delivery system if appropriate eg. dyspnoeic patients
  • Appropriately sized blood pressure cuff
  • A multiparameter monitoring unit

Supplies for administering oxygen There are oxygen points above the kennels and on columns hanging down from the ceiling. To use these we need to:

  • Select an adapter: there are two types of adapter according to whether we are connecting to a kennel or ceiling port (see picture)
  • Cut a length of green tubing
  • Attach the adaptor to the oxygen point and the tubing to the adaptor to allow oxygen deliver to the patient
These items can be found above where the fluids live to the right of the laboratory area. Just ask a member of staff if you need help finding and setting up these items. Left: adaptors for the oxygen points above kennels have adjustable flow gauges. Right: ceiling column adaptors are round

In this corner of the cat pod you will find lots of useful resources and books. You are more that welcome to refer to these when in ICU.

On the countertop you will find pots of saline flushes for catheter checks. N.B can you spot the ICU common drugs cheat sheets? These are excellent revision tools.

Feline examination table This examination table can be used for feline procedures and checks. Underneath, you will also find lots of useful disposables such as cat litter and incontinence sheets.

Lab sample collection Outside of ICU you will find everything you need to prepare a sample to be sent to the lab - e.g. lab forms, plastic bio-hazard bags etc. Non-urgent blood samples from ICU in-patients can be placed (with their paperwork and in their bag) in the wall-mounted wire-cage/tray just outside of ICU, in readiness for the next 'lab run'. If you have time to run down samples to the lab, we would always be very grateful - just please remember to use the lab boxes provided.

Welcome to cat pod! Please remember that the ISFM feline friendly rules apply. And for patient stress and safety we ask that no more than 3 people enter cat pod at any one time and to try not to enter if there is a cat on the table.
