Africa

More than 1,3 billion people live on the African continent. The demographic growth is the highest in the world. Improved medicine has generally decreased death rates, while birth rates remain very high. Africa has the youngest population in the world. In Africa people have a low life expectancy and a high infant mortality because of contagious disease (AIDS), malnutrition, wars and a weak health service. Most Africa people live in the countryside. Metropolis are growing due to the exodus from countryside. But the poor often live on the outskirts of the cities, the shantytowns. Africa has a low density of population. The vast Sahara separates the people of northern Africa with clear skin (white Africa), who are mostly Berbers and Arabs, from those to the south, who are mostly with dark skin (black Africa). There are more than 3,000 ethnic or tribal groups in Africa. They all have their own language and culture. African culture is very important. Tribal art has become a way of distinguishing one tribe from another and can take many forms, including body painting, tattoos, skin incision (scarification), hairstyle.
