called "Oriental"- blanket term stereotyping East Asians
women were fetishized, seen as submissive or even as prostitutes

What did the government do?
- Contributed to stigma around Asians due to past events: Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), Japanese Internment (1942-1946)
- First federal civil rights trial involving an Asian American (1982)
- Vincent Chin killed in hate crime (see right photo)
