The Asian American Movement was a social justice movement rising against the mistreatment of individuals with Asian heritage, and aimed to create a place for Asians in American society. It was most active during the 60's to mid-70's and was mainly led by Chinese, Japanese, or Filipino individuals.

What was life like as an Asian American in the 60's?

called "Oriental"- blanket term stereotyping East Asians

women were fetishized, seen as submissive or even as prostitutes

labeled the "model minority"

still seen as outsiders to US even if they are a citizen

What did the government do?

  • Contributed to stigma around Asians due to past events: Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), Japanese Internment (1942-1946)
  • First federal civil rights trial involving an Asian American (1982)
    • Vincent Chin killed in hate crime (see right photo)
    • Catalyzed the movement, brought national attention
  • Japanese Reparations Bill 1988
      • Paid $$ back to families of victims of Japanese internment camps

Even with all the advocacy of the past few decades, Asians were still blamed and hate crimed.

    • the idea of being "Asian American" became widespread
    • however, this also created a stereotype as Asian became synonymous with East Asian
      • excludes South Asians, Southeast Asians
  • Push for ethnic studies in institutions
    • UCLA taught the first Asian American Studies class (1970)
