Welcome

Dear Friends of the Hendricks County Community Foundation,

We are excited to share what a spectacular year we had in 2022. HCCF created a positive impact through community leadership, service to donors, a new strategic plan, partnerships with local nonprofit organizations and county government officials, effective grantmaking of over $1.5 million, and much more! These achievements show the impact and potential of HCCF:

Ryan Tanselle and William Rhodehamel

Our Mission

The Hendricks County Community Foundation is a trusted community partner in understanding needs, aligning resources, and empowering people to address today’s priorities and create lasting impact together.

  • We completed the data refresh from our 2019 Community Needs Assessment and released the results to our community. This statistically valid survey clearly shows what our neighbors see as the greatest needs in our community. Scan QR code below to read the report.
  • In April, we partnered with the Hendricks County Commissioners and Council to help distribute American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to nonprofits working in our community. We created a process to distribute $6.6 million dollars of ARPA funds through 2024.

Our Vision

Hendricks County is a place where everyone has the opportunity to have a fulfilling life and the tools they need to build a stronger future together.

  • In May, HCCF welcomed a new staff member, Bryan Chatfield, our Community Inclusion & Engagement Manager. Bryan’s role is intended to help us build relationships in communities we haven’t engaged effectively before, including communities of color, communities of faith, and newer county residents.

ENLARGE TEXT

HCCF recognized total revenue of almost $2 million, resulting in year-end total endowed investments of $17.8 million. We awarded over $1.5 million in grants, supporting a wide range of charitable organizations, projects and programs. Our Board of Directors completed our new Strategic Plan in October, giving us a clear roadmap for our future activities. The plan rests on four strategic goals:

  • Intentional Action – Our grantmaking and community leadership initiatives prioritize meaningful impact and inclusivity.
  • Engaged Leaders – Our HCCF team models active and informed community leadership.
  • Expanded Resources – Increased assets help grow our mission-aligned grantmaking and operational sustainability.
  • Broadened Awareness – Our name is more widely known for the values-aligned and purpose-driven work we do throughout Hendricks County.
We’re excited to share this work with our community as we move forward. We are thankful for the continued support of our long-time donors, our many volunteers, our new friends, and our dedicated professional staff. Your Board is committed to realizing our mission to be a trusted community partner in understanding needs, aligning resources, and empowering people to address today’s priorities and create lasting impact together. Please join us today! Sincerely,

Our Values

Community: Every decision we make is grounded in the needs and aspirations of the current and future people of the Hendricks County community. Future Focus: We use data and experience to make responsible, transparent financial decisions that focus on creating and facilitating transformational change with sustainable impact. Collaboration: We work closely with people and organizations to facilitate connection and catalyze partnerships that increase impact across our community. Inclusion: We respect and value the unique perspectives of every individual and intentionally work in ways that increase diverse participation and equitable opportunity.

HCCF Helps Distribute American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funds to Hendricks County

HCCF developed a plan with the county to distribute American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to nonprofits. In late April, we finalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commissioners to provide our expertise and create a grant program for up to 20% of the County’s ARPA funds – a total of up to $6.6 million. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill to speed up the country’s recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing recession. The funding Hendricks County received is part of the $350 billion to help state, local, and tribal governments bridge budget shortfalls and mitigate the fiscal shock of the pandemic. Noncompetitive grants of $5,030,355 were made to community organizations that, along with their clients, were most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Competitive grants will be offered through an annual application for the next three years, with the first grant cycle in 2022 awarding grants of $548,395 to 25 local nonprofits. The County Commissioners and Council made final funding decisions for the noncompetitive and competitive grants in July and November, respectively. The Community Foundation is honored and excited to be collaborating with our county officials on this important work. Because of these grants, local nonprofits serving our community will be able to continue to meet the needs of our community, despite the financial setbacks created by the pandemic.

“I am excited that Hendricks County is able to help the not-for-profits who carried on during the pandemic helping our citizens in need. Hendricks County has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make transformative changes and improvements in the lives of our citizens through the American Rescue Plan Fiscal Recovery Funds and I am proud of Hendricks County for recognizing the important service these organizations provide.”

Diversity Equity and Inclusion

As a result of the 2019 Community Needs Assessment, HCCF recognized a growing gap in both our community and our engagement of minority populations. In late 2021, the Community Foundation launched its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force, led by William Rhodehamel (President & CEO) and Ryan Tanselle (Board Chair), to review our activities, policies, and programs and promote inclusion and non-discrimination for all who live, work, and play in Hendricks County. The Board of Directors took this work into account as part of our updated mission, vision and values, as well as transitioned the task force to a regular committee of the Community Foundation. As HCCF continued this effort, it became clear that a dedicated staff member was needed to both serve the Community Foundation and our community and provide additional capacity within the Hendricks County Alliance for Diversity. This decision led to the creation of a new staff position: Community Inclusion & Engagement Manager. In May 2022, Bryan Chatfield joined the Community Foundation’s staff and is responsible for implementing HCCF’s DEI Policy, Community Foundation program review, community outreach, and board & staff education. During Bryan’s first months in his role, he met community stakeholders and learned about opportunities for collaboration in making our community a more inclusive place to live, work, and play. Through this initial work, we significantly increased the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) participation in the 2022 Needs Assessment Survey. As part of our current strategic plan, approved in August 2022, we identified the following objectives as it pertains to DEI:

INITIATIVE

  • Review and redesign the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program;
  • Conduct a survey to understand the demographics of nonprofits serving Hendricks County;
  • Add capacity at the Hendricks County Alliance for Diversity;
  • Increase HCCF board and staff understanding of our DEI priorities;
  • Increase diversity of our volunteers; and,
  • Thoughtfully share results of the 2022 Community Needs Assessment through the community.

The Villanuera Family

A DONOR STORY

Marland and Tanya grew up with strong family values of philanthropy. Marland’s parents and grandparents were raised in the Philippines and were no strangers to poverty. Although they didn’t have much, Marland remembers that they were always quick to offer help to their neighbors in need. When Marland and Tanya married and started a family, they wanted to impart these same values to their children. While visiting Disney World, Marland and Tanya’s young children became very unhappy that they didn’t have enough money to buy what they wanted. Marland and Tanya realized that they needed to teach their children to focus on the value of philanthropy rather than self-interest. Because of their involvement with HCCF, they knew the Community Foundation was the perfect avenue to accomplish this. Marland and Tanya started a Donor Advised Fund at HCCF which allows them the flexibility of supporting whatever charity they choose. Their hope is to involve their children in the grantmaking decision process so that they will learn and appreciate the value of giving back in their community.

“HCCF has played such an important role in helping us pass down the tradition of philanthropy to our kids and giving us a way to support our community.”

- Marland Villanueva

The Parks Foundation

A GRANT STORY

Representatives from Parks & Trails Organizations in Hendricks County

In June, HCCF and the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County (PFOHC) announced a long-term strategic partnership to maximize our collective impact in supporting parks, trails and outdoor spaces throughout Hendricks County. To kick off this collaboration, HCCF awarded PFOHC $20,000 from its Community Enhancement Funds which will be used to provide funding to enhance the cultural, recreational and natural resources in Hendricks County. In this formal partnership, HCCF will now direct all parks and trails improvement projects to PFOHC for funding. This new process will allow parks departments equal opportunity to compete for available grant dollars. Additionally, HCCF will now lean on the expertise of PFOHC to make decisions related to the greatest needs of the parks and trails systems in Hendricks County.

“We are grateful for this new partnership with the Hendricks County Community Foundation, the generous grant funding and the vote of confidence to steward these resources for our parks and trails.”

ince 1998, the Community Foundation has been proud to partner with Lilly Endowment Inc. to offer the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Over the last 25 years, HCCF has awarded 71 Lilly Scholarships to students from Hendricks County. This scholarship provides full tuition to an accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in Indiana and a yearly stipend for required books and equipment. Hendricks County Lilly Scholars are awarded this prestigious scholarship based on significant community service, outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills.

Congratulations to our three 2022 Lilly Scholars: Summer Adkins of Avon High School, Justine Vandenberg of Danville High School, and Karlee Waugh of Plainfield High School. Our scholars toured one of HCCF’s recent grantees, Fight Back Fitness (formerly Rock Steady Boxing) of Brownsburg and learned firsthand the value our local nonprofits add to our community. Play the video and see our scholars interact with some special seniors who are boxing to fight Parkinson’s.
